Baby, It’s Dry Outside…The Best DIY Hair Conditioner

Winter can be so hard on our hair, skin, and nails.  Depending on where you live, your hair in particular can take a real beating. Brittle, breaking tresses no more!  Check out these all natural, budget-friendly remedies.

Look no further than your pantry for your cure-all. Using coconut oil as the base of your mask can reverse protein lost in the hair shaft, and used weekly it can really make hair more soft and manageable.  Better than store-bought conditioners, these all natural versions won’t strip your hair or add harmful synthetic chemicals. With more fatty proteins than other oils such as olive, sunflower, or avocado oils, regular use of coconut oil masks have been proven to result in shinier hair with less breakage.

Here are a few “recipes” to try, based on what you have on hand.  Remember to shampoo really well to remove the oils.

Coconut Hair Mask I 

  • 1 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  •  2 tablespoons cup organic coconut oil, melted

Add coconut oil and apple cider vinegar in a bowl.  Mix well.  Coat and apply evenly to damp or dry hair and leave on for 15-20 minutes before rinsing out.  Shampoo and condition as normal. 

Coconut Hair Mask II

  •  2 tablespoons cup organic coconut oil, melted
  • 1 egg, whisked
  • 1/2 ripe avocado
  • 1 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • Whisk egg in a bowl.  Mash avocado in a separate bowl.  Combine ingredients with coconut oil and mix well.  Coat and apply evenly to damp or dry hair and leave on for 15-20 minutes before rinsing out.  Shampoo and condition as normal.

Overnight Coconut Hair Mask III

  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 3 drops pure lavender essential oilCombine ingredients, apply directly to scalp. Massage the coconut oil mixture into your scalp for about 10 minutes to increase blood circulation.Use a shower cap or old t-shirt to cover your head and wrap it up so that your hair is completely covered. Leave it on overnight.  Shampoo and condition as normal.
