Since the conception of advertising, celebrities have been collaborating with brands to tout their wares. Here’s a look at some memorable partnerships over the last few decades.
sean connery for jim beam, 1974
anna nicole smith for guess, 1995
mark wahlberg AKA “marky mark” for calvin klein, 1992
Endorsements, however, can be risky business for the advertiser. There have been many a company forced to pull contracts with their spokesperson, after any number of, ahem, poor choices were made on the part of the celebrity.
tiger woods lost several huge sponsors following his 2009 infidelity scandals, costing him an estimated $25 million
paula deen lost most of her endorsement following a 2013 public racial slur
And other times, the tables are turned and it is the celebrity dropping the advertiser.
nicole kidman dropped her 2015 endorsement with ethihad airways after learning of their abusive labor practices
In more recent years, advertisers have become more savvy and pay celebs and sports heroes a ton of cash to endorse their products. I imagine there is more thought put into the character history and personal life of the celebrity prior to offering multi-million dollar contracts.
