Galentine’s Day became “a thing” when Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) of Parks and Recreation declared it as such in season two. It’s a recurring storyline on the show, with Leslie hosting parties for her gals in lieu of, or sometimes in addition to, Valentine’s Day.
Now it is “officially” (?) recognized as being a “ladies celebrating ladies” holiday on February 13. This means that even if you have a significant other in your life, you can still celebrate your gal pals. Let’s be honest: female friendships are among the strongest bonds in all of the land.
You too can have some fun with this. Host a girls night in complete with wine, chocolate and movies. Think Mean Girls, Thelma and Louise, He’s Just not that Into You, The Notebook. Meet for drinks and do a gift exchange. Get together for manicures and coffee. Host a fancy brunch, complete with flowers and champagne.
As Leslie puts it, “Ho’s before bros, utereses before dude-ereses, and ovaries before bro-varies.” Amen, sister!
