New York Fashion Week began in 1943 by the New York Dress Institute according to CFDA.com.
In an article by Slate.com, they uncover a little bit of the background behind Fashion Week. The event was called originally called “Press Week,” and was created to attract attention away from French fashion during World War II, when fashion workers couldn’t travel to Paris to see French fashion shows and to highlight American designs. The event was a success and people grew more interested in American design which was featured in more fashion magazines.
