Summer footwear is plenty varied and always fun, yet sometime we have a hard time straying from our trustworthy flip flops or running sneakers.
Espadrilles are a comfy and cute alternative to your everyday flip flop style that are just as casual as you would like for them to be. They come in wedge or flat form, allowing them to be worn in any location, for any occasion.
According to wisegeek.com, “Espadrilles or alpargatas are normally casual, flat, but sometimes high-heeled shoes originating in the Pyrenees. They usually have a canvas or cotton fabric upper and a flexible sole made of jute rope. The jute rope sole is the defining characteristic of an espadrille; the uppers vary widely in style.”
I attribute their start of popularity in the US with Lauren Bacall’s wearing them in the 1948 film Key Largo.
