Fall is officially here! With the new season comes pumpkins, boots, apple cider, bonfire nights, and PLAIDS! Gingham, madras, tartan, houndstooth, tattersall, buffalo – the list goes on. The great thing about this fun pattern is its applicability across all fashion preferences. A houndstooth vest can be traditional and preppy, while a buffalo check flannel can be boho paired with a bit of lace. If you’re looking to mix plaids, a major trend this season, consider the following ground rules:
1. Opposites attract. Choose a “larger” plaid to wear with a “smaller” one. For example, don’t wear a buffalo check flannel with a buffalo check scarf. It would be too much! Opt for a tartan that complements its counterpart.
2. Pick ‘n’ choose. Break it up. Choose one plaid as a focal point and then accessorize with another pattern. Scarves are a great add-on for mixing patterns.
3. In the fam. The color family, that is. While mixing is fun, if you aren’t so bold, simply pick two items within the same hue.
4. Ta-Da! Sometimes the unexpected works! The famous line goes, “It looks better on you than on the hanger…” So, try it on and see if it looks good!
